The Garrofers sector is a newly established residential development situated in one of the valleys of the Collserola Park. In 2021, we were commissioned to design three of the plots within this development, whilst the remaining six plots were assigned to two other teams (ABR Arquitectes and Martí & Sardà Arquitectes). The challenge presented by these new buildings was to create a welcoming new neighbourhood, one that is in harmony with the surroundings and establishes a cohesive dialogue between the different architectural proposals.

The project’s three plots are located at the lowest point of the valley, occupying a prime position facing the new green space, with views towards the Collserola Tower.

Two identical, symmetrical blocks are arranged on each plot, positioned on the upper and lower sections to maximise the open space between them, where the gardens and communal pool are located.

By staggering the floor plans in different orientations, we were able to break away from the rigid forms suggested by the initial masterplan, creating lighter façades that engage in a better dialogue with the park. This strategy allowed us to avoid sheer four-storey façades and successfully connect the ground floor gardens.

The massing also enabled the creation of large terraces on the first and second floors, maximising the efficiency of the built area, as the roofs of the lower floors simultaneously serve as the decking for the outdoor spaces of the dwellings above.

The project’s materiality sought to utilise natural elements such as timber and stone—a traditional combination offering high durability and sitting in perfect tune with the environment.
