Our client decided to restore their ancestors’ home, a traditional farmhouse construction typical of the Cerdanya region. Originally made of stone with small apertures, the complex was composed of three distinct volumes: the farmhouse proper, the stable, and the hayloft.
The project consisted of the rehabilitation and refurbishment of these structures, aiming to preserve the history of the complex through minute details. Even today, one can observe the façade and distinguish the three original volumes, each built with different sizes and types of stone.
Regarding the functional programme, two single-family dwellings were designed, sharing a communal garden and parking. The homes are arranged over a ground floor, a first floor, and an attic level, from which the Tosa mountain can be viewed through a large roof window.
Consistently following criteria of maximum efficiency and solar gain, the South façade facing the garden features large glazing and a substantial cantilevered balcony to capture the views. Conversely, the North face, fronting the street, houses the entrance doors and smaller, functional windows.
The project’s materiality was already defined by the pre-existing fabric. Consequently, the approach was to preserve as much of the original material as possible while minimising the visual impact of new additions—such as the dark grey metal lintels designed to simulate the colour of slate, ensuring optimal architectural integration.
