Located on a plot occupied by an existing two-storey detached house (ground and first floor) built in 1970, we were commissioned to design its refurbishment and extension. Although the original house held no remarkable architectural value, the owners wished to preserve the main rectangular volume.
A ground floor volume was designed to wrap around the existing structure, giving rise to a new staircase that connects to the first floor. This staircase generates the new main entrance porch and extends in an ‘S’ shape from the first floor down to form a pergola in front of the ground-floor living room.
The day zone, located primarily on the ground floor, is designed based on an open-plan concept where the kitchen acts as the central hub connecting the living and dining areas. All these spaces enjoy views towards the exterior porch, the garden, and the new swimming pool. The night zone, containing the bedrooms and bathrooms, is situated within the refurbished house, with openings positioned at the rear to ensure greater privacy. Finally, the master suite and dressing room are located on the first floor, with access to a new terrace created atop the roof of the extension.
Regarding materiality, the existing house retained its original finish, which was repaired and painted white. In contrast, the extension was constructed in exposed concrete, clearly distinguishing the old from the new whilst maintaining a clear harmony across the ensemble.
